What is a Reddit shadowban?

A Reddit shadowban is a restriction that hides your posts, comments, and votes from other users without notifying you. Your account may still look normal to you: you can browse, vote, comment, and post. Other users cannot see your activity, even if your posts appear in subreddit feeds while you are logged in. Check from a private window to see what other users see.

Reddit originally used shadowbans to deal with spam bots. If a bot operator learns that an account was banned, they can create another one. If the bot keeps posting without knowing its content is hidden, it uses the spammer's time and resources without reaching anyone.

Reddit's Content Policy allows the platform to act against accounts that break its rules. Reddit also uses shadowbans as an enforcement tool.

A shadowbanned account may show these signs: posts do not appear in subreddit feeds, comments are hidden from other users, the profile shows a "page not found" error, votes do not affect scores, and Reddit sends no notification.

Three-step Reddit post visibility triage: sort by New and check the direct post link, review community rules and removal notices, then check official account status or notices. A missing post alone cannot confirm a shadowban.
One missing post can have several causes. See Reddit Help's guide to why you can't see a post.

Shadowban vs. subreddit ban

These bans work differently, so the next step depends on which one you have:

  • Subreddit ban: A community's moderators apply it to that subreddit and notify you through modmail. Your account still works elsewhere. Appeal by messaging the moderators.
  • Shadowban: Reddit's anti-spam systems or admins apply it across the platform without notifying you. Appeal through Reddit's official process.

How to check if you are shadowbanned

To check whether your Reddit account is shadowbanned, use the checker above or view your profile from outside your logged-in session.

Use our shadowban checker tool

The checker uses public profile and account signals. Enter your username to see whether Reddit returns an active or suspended profile, or whether the result is unclear. For active profiles, it also shows total karma, post karma, comment karma, and account age.

Reddit shadowban checker showing u/Binance account is not shadowbanned with 12.4K total karma, 8 year 9 month account age, 9.3K post karma, and 3.0K comment karma

Log out and check your profile

Open reddit.com/u/yourusername in a private window. If your profile and recent activity appear, the account may not be shadowbanned. If you see a "page not found" error, it may be shadowbanned. Check again in a few hours in case a temporary server issue caused the error.

Post in r/ShadowBan

You can also post in r/ShadowBan. The community's bot checks your account and replies with a result.

Common causes of a Reddit shadowban

Reddit's anti-spam systems look for behavior patterns that resemble spam. Because the checks are automated, they can make mistakes and flag legitimate activity.

Excessive self-promotion

Reddit's self-promotion guidelines say no more than 10% of your activity should promote your own work. Accounts that mainly promote a website, product, or YouTube channel may be treated as spam. Reddit looks at overall patterns, not a fixed formula. Posting links to the same domain across several subreddits can resemble spam-bot activity.

A 90/10 promotion guideline: focus 90% of activity on adding value and joining conversations, and 10% on sharing your own posts. The graphic says this is guidance, not a guarantee, and to follow each subreddit’s rules.
Reddit for Business recommends the 90/10 approach for business accounts. Read its profile setup guidance.

Vote manipulation

Using multiple accounts to upvote your posts, coordinating votes through Discord or group chats, or using automated tools to increase vote counts counts as vote manipulation under Reddit's Content Policy. Reddit looks at IP addresses, timing, and behavior. Even a small group of friends can trigger a flag when the same accounts repeatedly upvote one user's posts.

Cross-posting identical content

Posting the same link or nearly identical content to several subreddits in a short time can trigger a shadowban. A Pew Research Center study found that 3% of organic users post identical content to more than two communities within an hour. Reddit may treat that pattern as a bot-detection signal.

Ban evasion

Creating a new account to get around a ban is a site-wide violation. Reddit may link accounts through IP addresses, device fingerprints, and behavior. Ban evasion can put every associated account at risk of a shadowban.

Aggressive messaging and new-account spam

Mass-following users, sending unsolicited promotional DMs, or posting at high volume from a new account can trigger spam detection. Reddit pays particular attention to new accounts that start with heavy activity because the pattern can resemble a spam bot.

How to appeal a Reddit shadowban

To appeal a Reddit shadowban, contact Reddit's admin team. Use these steps:

  1. Confirm the shadowban: check your account with the tool above before you appeal. A false positive can waste your appeal opportunity.
  2. Submit an appeal: go to reddit.com/appeals. Say why you think the shadowban was a mistake, acknowledge any behavior that may have triggered it, and commit to following Reddit's Content Policy. Include context about your account.
  3. Be honest and respectful: explain what you were trying to do and acknowledge any behavior that may have triggered the ban. For example: "I was sharing blog links across several subreddits because I thought they were relevant. I understand now that this resembled spam. I will follow the 10% guideline going forward."
  4. Wait patiently: appeals can take 24 hours to several weeks. Do not create another account while you wait. Reddit may link it to the shadowbanned account, which could hurt your appeal.

Reports from r/ShadowBan suggest legitimate users flagged by mistake often have a high appeal success rate when they appeal promptly and explain the situation honestly.

How to avoid getting shadowbanned

To lower your risk of a Reddit shadowban, maintain strong Reddit account health across karma, CQS, posting patterns, and community standing to reduce your enforcement risk.

  • Follow the 90/10 rule: keep self-promotion to 10% or less of your activity. For every promotional post, make at least nine non-promotional contributions.
  • Build karma before promoting: spend 60 to 90 days participating in communities before you promote. New accounts that start with promotional posts face higher enforcement risk. Read our karma building guide.
  • Space out submissions: do not post the same content to several subreddits within minutes or hours. Spread those posts over several days.
  • Use one account: using several accounts for the same purpose can lead to enforcement. Reddit looks at IP addresses, device fingerprints, and behavior to identify linked accounts.
  • Read subreddit rules: posts removed for rule violations can affect your account's spam risk. Learn how AutoModerator filters posts.
  • Monitor weekly: check for a shadowban each week. Check your CQS monthly by posting in r/WhatIsMyCQS.

Understanding Reddit account health

A shadowban is one part of Reddit account health. Reddit looks at your karma history, Contributor Quality Score (CQS), account age, posting patterns, and how AutoModerator handles your posts across communities. These signals affect whether your posts appear, get filtered, or are removed.

These signals interact. A low CQS can increase shadowban risk, and a shadowban history can make future enforcement more likely. Low karma can trigger AutoModerator removals, making it harder to build the karma needed to get past those filters. Account health depends on several signals.

Contributor Quality Score (CQS)

CQS is Reddit's internal content-quality signal. It reflects the quality and trustworthiness of your contributions, uses five levels from Lowest to Highest, and affects content distribution. Check your CQS in r/WhatIsMyCQS or use our free user analyzer to review your contribution patterns. Read our Reddit CQS guide for more.

Karma & Account Age

AutoModerator checks karma and account age when it filters posts. An account with 50 comment karma is blocked from about 70% of mid-size and large subreddits. An account with 500 comment karma gets past roughly 95% of those filters. Read our Reddit karma farming guide for ways to build karma.

AutoModerator Filtering

AutoModerator filters posts before they reach a community. If your posts disappear without an explanation, it may be the cause. Read our AutoModerator guide to learn which rules can catch marketers.

Suspensions & Bans

Shadowbans are silent. Suspensions and bans are visible enforcement actions. A site-wide suspension can lock your account for 3, 7, or 30 days, or permanently. Creating another account while suspended counts as ban evasion. Read our guides to account suspensions and Reddit bans for recovery steps.

Shadowbans and Reddit marketing

A shadowban can cost a brand time. Reddit does not notify you, so you may keep posting content that other users cannot see. Some marketing teams say they found the problem only after weeks without engagement.

Brands that last on Reddit take part in communities instead of using the site only to broadcast promotions. Build account credibility through 90+ days of genuine participation, make each post useful on its own, and disclose your affiliation. If you use a Reddit upvote service, use it to amplify valuable content rather than low-quality promotions.

If several people on your team post from the same office or network, Reddit may read their activity as multi-account manipulation. Give each person a distinct participation pattern across communities unrelated to your brand.

Add weekly shadowban checks, monthly CQS audits, and post-removal tracking to your Reddit marketing plan.

Reddit's evolving spam detection

In 2015, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said shadowbans should be reserved for bots and legitimate users should receive a notice. Since then, Reddit has increasingly used account suspensions, which notify users, for human rule-breakers while keeping shadowbans for automated spam detection.

Reddit uses machine-learning models trained on known spam-account behavior. They look at posting frequency, similar content, account age compared with activity, voting patterns, and other signals. Reddit's 2024 transparency report says the platform actioned over 258 million pieces of spam content. Genuine participation is the best defense against Reddit enforcement.

Treat a shadowban as a reason to review your Reddit activity. Take part in communities, follow the 90/10 rule, check your account regularly, and build karma before you promote. Review your Reddit Contributor Quality Score too. A low CQS can cause filters that look like shadowban symptoms. For help with Reddit engagement, see our services.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Reddit shadowban is a restriction that makes your posts, comments, and votes invisible to other users while your account still looks normal to you. Reddit does not notify you. Other users may see a page not found error on your profile, and your content may not appear in subreddit feeds or comment threads. Reddit originally used shadowbans against spam bots so they would keep posting without knowing their content was hidden.
You can check for a Reddit shadowban with the tool above, which queries Reddit's public API to see whether your profile and content are visible. You can also open reddit.com/u/yourusername in a private browsing window. If you see a page not found error, your account may be shadowbanned. You can also post in r/ShadowBan, where a bot checks your account and replies with the result.
A Reddit shadowban can be triggered by excessive self-promotion, vote manipulation, posting the same content across several subreddits in a short time, ban evasion, mass messaging, or high-volume promotion from a new account. Reddit's anti-spam systems look for behavior patterns, so activity you did not intend as spam can still trigger a shadowban.
To appeal a Reddit shadowban, submit an appeal at reddit.com/appeals. Acknowledge any behavior that may have triggered the ban, explain what you intended to do, and commit to following Reddit's content policy. Appeals can take 24 hours to several weeks. Do not create another account while you wait; Reddit may treat that as ban evasion and it could hurt your appeal. Legitimate users caught by mistake generally have a high success rate when they explain the situation honestly.
No. A subreddit ban and a Reddit shadowban are different. A subreddit's moderators apply a ban to that community and notify you through modmail. Your account still works elsewhere, and you can appeal by messaging the moderators. Reddit's anti-spam systems apply a shadowban across the platform without notifying you. Appeal through Reddit's official process at reddit.com/appeals.
Yes. Excessive self-promotion can lead to a Reddit shadowban. Reddit's self-promotion guidelines say no more than 10% of your activity should promote your own work. Accounts that mainly post links to a website, YouTube channel, or product may be treated as spam. Even useful content can look like spam when you post it across several subreddits in a similar pattern. Keep most of your activity focused on participating in communities.
You can lower your risk of a Reddit shadowban by keeping at least 90% of your activity focused on genuine community participation. Build karma before promoting, space posts across several days, and use one account. Read each subreddit's rules, avoid automated posting tools, and check your account regularly. Accounts that take part in communities are less likely to look like spam.
