What Is Cake Day on Reddit?
Cake day is your Reddit account's anniversary. It lands on the date you signed up, every year. For example, an account created on March 5, 2019 celebrates on March 5.
It's tied to your sign-up date, so it has nothing to do with your real birthday.

What the cake icon next to a username means
On your cake day, Reddit adds a small slice of cake next to your username on every post and comment you make. That's the whole official perk. You don't get bonus karma or extra reach.
The icon goes away when the day ends. This checker uses UTC dates, the same clock Reddit stores creation times in, so your local calendar can be a day off. It also counts Feb 29 accounts only in leap years.
The "Happy Cake Day" tradition
When Redditors spot the cake, they reply "Happy cake day!" and often upvote the comment. It's an easy way to welcome someone and keep a thread friendly.

Some users post on their cake day to ride that goodwill. Check the subreddit's rules first, though. Some communities remove posts that exist only to announce a cake day.
For a place where that's the whole point, try r/cakeday. People post there to share their cake day, and other Redditors stop by to wish them a happy one.
How to Check Your Reddit Cake Day
Here's how to find the date in a few seconds, depending on where you use Reddit.
On desktop
- Go to reddit.com/user/yourusername.
- Find Cake day in the profile sidebar.
- Read the full date your account was created.
Checking someone else? Hover over their username in any thread. The profile card shows their cake day right under the name.

In the Reddit app
Tap your avatar, then open your profile. The app shows how old your account is, such as 7y, but it doesn't always show the exact date.
To get the date and the days left until your next cake day, enter your username in the checker above. It works for any public account.
Does Account Age Matter on Reddit?
Yes, mostly as a filter. Many subreddits set up AutoModerator, Reddit's automatic filter bot, to hold back posts and comments from accounts under a minimum age or karma level. Moderators may also check account age when they review reports.
Reddit account age tiers explained
The checker sorts every account into one of four account age tiers:
- New (under 30 days): most likely to hit age filters. Spend this stretch commenting in communities you care about.
- Young (30 days to 1 year): fewer filters apply, though larger subreddits may set higher minimums.
- Established (1 to 5 years): most age rules stop mattering. Karma and post history carry more weight now.
- Veteran (5 years or more): age is rarely a barrier. People judge you on what you post.
Why age alone doesn't build trust
An old account isn't automatically a trusted one. For example, a 6-year-old account with no activity can look less credible than a 1-year-old account that comments every week. To build that history, follow our guide on how to build Reddit karma the right way.
